Was that in response to my post or Piersman's?
Was to yours.
Personal choice is exactly that. Easy to make brakes look better but perform worse.

OK thanks. Can you explain please - what did I say that was about personal choice rather than technical reasons?

Oops, apologies.
My comment was about the cosmetic affect. That wasn't you.
I confused myself, no wonder I confused you.

I have MTEC disks on two of my cars and no issues yet, I went for the silver coating and the brakes weren't very sharp on the first drive until the section where the pad touches was burnt off but since then they have been great and the coating seems to have stopped any corrosion on the non contact parts.
I went for the C-hook design, as I had heard the issues with holes and I couldn't see the advantage of dimples.
MTEC were recommended to me by a local brake specialist who is ex motorsport and now provides brake kits, refurbs callipers and skims disks.
On a side note the service and prices from MTEC have always been really good!

Thanks all for the input. Just to close out the thread, I opted for a pair of TRW discs as they were on a cracking special offer and they're painted black on the outer edges and the inner hats where they'll be visible. Hopefully get those fitted this weekend along with the new pads.

This is a great guide to EBCs latest offerings so we can be sure to buy the right pads for purpose, people using Red or green grade for track not good , just choose the right grade

If you're trying to say red and green grades are not suitable for track use, that's a ridiculous generalisation. To choose the right pads you need to know the temperature range that you need them to work in and match that up to the range the pads support - it's as simple as that.

Usually a good idea to steer away from EBC anything to be honest.

I had Redstuff on my last XKR and loved the lack of dust, but did find they lacked bite when cold. I wanted ceramic pads for the newer one, discovered the Jurid White range but they only do pads for the front of the XKR, not the rear. I ended up with EBC Redstuff pads and disappointingly, they have DOT edge code of EE, which is the poorest rating you can get away with for road use in countries that use that system so far. The Jurid White front pads are rated GG.

I've found Mtec discs to be fantastic to be honest?
Used them in my last 3 cars, I use the j hook ones, never have an issue?
Their customer service is also spot on.
So far the only discs on my m135i that haven't given me problems are the mtec ones!!!!

Ok so I'm confused by most of this thread, and comments like this confuse me further.
Forgive me for being niave, but EBC/MTEC were featured on Car SOS and produced brakes for a car they were working on.
Now Car SOS aren't Wheeler Dealers, and I would like to think that Fuzz and Tim put a bit more love and effort in to the car for the owner it's going to. I can't see how they'd allow sub standard parts on to a car they're working on to be honest.

Don't be confused EBC & M-tec are definitely at the low end of the market.
I wouldn't use either on a car I was keeping.
There is only one brand I would less likely use & that is Eicher.

I have no idea why they chose those brands, but the first possibility that comes to mind is that they were sponsored. In any case, a light entertainment program isn't a great source of impartial technical reviews.

EBC and Mtech are not low end of the market.
Lol.
EBC far exceeds anything "OEM", but they are not suitable for hard-core performance driving (IE Track use)
I'd have no problem using Yellowstuffs on a road car, they work well. (I speak from experience).
But mtec discs are pretty good to be fair, as I've said, I've used them across 3 cars now and never had a single issue with any of the discs.
Two of those cars have had heavy track use.
One time I did have a problem with the black-coated discs which as I stupidly left the handbrake up after the test drive, fused with the pads. Had to put new pads in and sand the deposit off the disc.
One e-mail to Mtec and they refunded me plus the cost of the pads - can't really say much more in terms of the quality of service

If it was on Wheeler Dealers I'd agree, but the effort that they put in to the car far exceeds anything a light entertainment show could/would get away with. Remember as well that they're a proper garage too, always have been, so again if they do shoddy work on TV they're not exactly going to get people coming in and hiring them to do their cars are they.

Well on point 1 you argue with you only have to look at prices for confirmation of that.
On customer service I will agree with you but customer service doesn't stop your car.
3 sets of discs all of which cracked, yes they changed them but on the third set I just threw them away & got some better ones.

Price doesn't necessarily indicate quality, while it can do at a broad stroke.
Discs are not particularly expensive to make, depending on the car the prices .
For example on my m135i , OE discs are around £230 at the front.
The Mtec ones are around £170 .
As I said on my car the brand new OE discs lasted around 2000 miles and 3 trackdays before they were warped and very unpleasant to drive on.
Mtec discs went on and we are at 4 trackdays on these now, without any problems.
If you have drilled discs then of course these will crack - any drilled disc is much more prone to cracking. All of mine have been J hook or grooved and not had any problems.
Horses for courses but I have nothing but praise for the mtec discs, also ------------------ surprising this ------------- DISCS ARE GENERALLY JUST DISCS. IE there's very little difference in quality between a £220 and a £140 one.
I would like to think I give my car more stick than your "average" enthusiast, plenty of high speed driving, trackdays, autobahn trips etc, and there's been literally no issues? :|

You get no arguments from me on that, alas I never mentioned quality in my statement (although I may have implied it by saying they were cr@p) The phrase "low end of the market" is only ever talking about price.
